Search Engines
A Web site that automatically gathers and maintains information about all of the Web sites on the Web.
Each Web search engine uses a different method to index the Web, so your search results using different search engines might vary. In addition to using indexing, some search engines, such as Yahoo!, list Web sites by category. Other search engines, such as AltaVista, Excite, and HotBot, search the Web for new sites and compile data about the information contained within each site.

Most search engines gather information about Web sites by collecting data based on META tags entered into the HTML document by the Web page's developer. A META tag is an HTML tag including text (words describing the site) that identifies how the Web page's developer wants to add the Web site to a search engine's index.
